Located along the 25th St commercial corridor of Church Hill in Richmond VA, this project explores a modern reinterpretation of the live / work typology. Drawing inspiration from local materials and historic forms, a gang of pitched roofs delineate three live work units. Inexpensive materials - asphalt shingles, board and batten cement board, and contemporary windows- blend and enrich the neighborhood fabric. The ground floor of each unit has ample glazing, connecting the work within to the public sidewalk; above sits a lofty yet efficient one bedroom. A modern version of “living above the shop” these three units add to the mixed use, community of North Church Hill.
